'Stoned Alone' - 13th September 1967 - Star Club, Copenhagen

Sound Quality: C+
Performance: A-
Overall: 3/5 Storage (maybe)

Here is one of the few bootlegs I have with Syd Barrett, I only have one other one currently, and as I have said I am not a fan of the Barrett Era Floyd as Albums go.

It is really fascinating to hear the performances before 1970. before 1970 the performances were really raw then they started to become the clear distinct sound that we know and love, still very emotional of course but its like they became masters of their own sound, then it took them a couple of years to really find their feet with albums.

As stated in the original info the lyrics are barely audible which is a real shame because this sounds like a good gig, lots of grooving going on and the music is clear for this date. There are some unfamiliar tracks here for some fans. 'Stoned Alone' also known as 'Reaction In G', and also 'Rush In A Million' also known as 'One In A Million'. I have heard both of these tracks before on an anthology of unreleased tracks nut stillgood to hear them again. Astronomy Domine is the highlight to me, even without words.

Some of these tracks are not favorites of mine but these are all good renditions and even without the vocals it is worth a listen because of the rare nature of the ROIO. The last three tracks are basically interviews and snippets here and there and can be safely avoided, the interview with Syd is interesting, it is quite short which is a shame but you can see how together Syd is, it is sad to think that over such a short period be descended into madness.

I will let you know what the other one I have with Syd is like when I get around to that review but this is worth grabbing if you come across it.

Comments:
Although there is a tremendous amount of hiss, the sound of the music isn't too bad; unfortunately there are absolutely no vocals. Maybe if you turned it up full blast you might hear some, but you might go deaf first. Given the rarity of Syd-era recordings, this is probably the same recording as on the Starclub Psycho roio. -KARL

Track 8 is the 1966 CBC (Canadian) interview. Track 9 is taken from sometime after they recorded More, but the exact date is unclear.

The 9/13/67 gig is slightly longer and much better quality here than its prior appearances on vinyl (a la Mystery Tracks) and CD (a la Starclub Psycho). If you want to hear an early Floydian gig, this would be one of the better disks you could find. One other thing worth notice is that the vocals are (of course) very difficult to hear for the first few songs. As the gig progresses, things get (slightly) better. -SCOTT

The version of Interstellar Overdrive listed as track 7 on the Stoned Alone roio is not from Copenhagen, but is the "Tonight.....London" recording. -THE HEDONIST
