'In De Weiden (In The Grassland)' - February 18, 1977 - De Oude Ahoy Hallen, Rotterdam, Netherlands

Sound Quality: C+
Performance: A
Overall: 2

The main problem here is volume inconsistancy, it is up and down on almost all the tracks as well as a dullness to the recording, not sure of
the generation but there is no brightness to it but that is pretty common on bootlegs, some are better than others and would be ok here if not
for the other issues. It is listenable but the problems get very annoying.

The performance is really good, I hope this is one of the shows I have another version of, not all the songs are total gems but most are
ecellent ans the rest are good. Highlight for me is tough because all the tracks are let down by the recording issues would be 'Have A Cigar'
because it was least effected and there is some great guitar work from Dave and vocals from Roger are really good.

Track Breakdown...

Sheep: Vocals are weak on the recording. Talking during quiet section, not vey loud but noticable but nice feel from the band.

Pigs On The Wing (part 1): The first part of the first chorus is hard to hear but soon improves, the audience is louder at the end so I guess the recorder boosted the volume.

Dogs: Quite a lot of volume inconsistancy here It settles down after a few minutes but then kicks in again with about 3 minutes or so to go. Also a little chatting during this time but not the entire time.

Pigs On The Wing (part 2): Virtually the same deal as the first part, the vocals are low then they improve and the overal song increases in volume as well.

Pigs (Three Different Ones): Yet more volume issues, too low to begin with. Really nice version, nice intensity to this version the volume is a problem. There is, what sounds like, a firework right near the end but it doesn't get distored or anything so doesn't spoil anything.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 1-5): Volume is better to begin with but then fades out but a nice rendition.

Welcome To The Machine: I prefer this track live, it has a real pulsing quality that didn't really have the same impact as on the album. Really evident here, liked it. Volume is fairly consistant.

Have A cigar: I think there is some kind of technical hitch because the ending seems to come as a surprise to everyone, including Dave! Not a cut just a dramatic stop before the whoosh and the radio effect kicks in. doesn't hurt the track too much.

Wish You Were Here: Yet more volume issues.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 6): During the intro section there are some recording issues as well as the inevitable volume problems. They sound like electronic noise pulses but I cant think what might cause them.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 7-9): Pretty well done cut over to another source, immense praise on whoever did that this source is more raw but has more of a brightness to it. Another good version.

Money: The volume starts to fade on this second source before the solo section, another good version ruined.

These shows normally have more than one source, the cut over durign the second half of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' means at least one other source, whether that is complete or usable is in question. Skip it.

***************************
After having seeded "Bleating and babbling" a couple of months ago, which is the complete and untouched version of the other recorder for this same night, I finally found a copy of the second recorder. My source is a first gen tape which came from the taper himself, a man from Eindhoven who isn't a Pink Floyd fan in particular but who has taped all their shows in the Netherlands since that night nonetheless! This tape has been transferred on CD-R and I received an exact copy of this CD-R.

This recording sounds much clearer and less noisy than "B&B", although this taper obviously was more distant to the stage than rec1. But this recording had more anomalies, like volume fluctuations and crackle. The recording stops during SOYCD, obviously because of problems with the recorder (bad cassette I guess). Then the source starts again right for the beginning of the encore 'Money'.To fill the gap, that is SOYCD7-9 and audience noise until the first cash register effects, I used a patch from "B&B". This patch has been indexed separately.

***************************
Show identifyer:
∞ Mr. Waters sneers '11' at 4:38 into 'Pigs3DO' after the second verse, not the third this time.
∞ Just like on the first night of the tour in Dortmund (23 Jan), the mono effect tape at the end of 'HAC' doesn't start on time, so the song ends abruptly.

***************************
Here is what I've done to the sources: REC2-
∞ channels rebalanced;
∞ Equalisation permitted to make the vocals and guitar a little bit clearer and to reduce considerably the hiss;
∞ The most obvious short volume fluctuations have been mastered, longer parts of lower and higer volume (especially during 'Dogs') have been left as they were in order to not denaturate the tape recording;
∞ some pops, noises, clipping and anomalies were removed.Alas, tape warbles and some analog crackle is impossible to remove without leaving a scar. Especially the tape anomalies at the end of rec2 were difficult to attenuate, but I wanted to leave as much possible of this source, until the tape completely lost it. The only thing you miss is constant warble for 2 more minutes until the source cuts.

Patch from REC1-
∞ Speedcorrected (96.5%);
∞ Channels rebalanced;
∞ Equalisation made vocals clearer, drum less 'boosted' and the overall less noisy and dull and reduced a lot of hiss;
∞ Volume has been tweaked to fit with the volume of the main source.

The overall volume is quite low at times, though the loudest parts are close to saturation... You might feel the need to raise the volume a little below clipping point for burning to CD-R.

***************************
Many many thanks to Jemig de Pemig for the source! Thanks also to the people who gave me advice for this first 'remaster' attempt.

'Atom Heart Mother Goes On The Road' - BBC 1970 & 1971

Sound Quality: A
Performance: B
Overall: 3

This is a BBC recording do except for a couple of blips here and there it is perfect but the performance is a let down. It just seems like they were holding back, a lot of the tracks had lost their edge, 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' being best example of this.

The highlight for me was actually 'Atom Heart Mother', even though this had the brass and choir I thought it was better than the studio version. Finally the historical factor comes up here, this is the only live performance of 'If' ever played by the Floyd (Roger played it live on his solo tours later on) it is well played but a standard version. Being that it wasn't played live then I guess it stands to reason that it doesn't deviate still good.

Track Breakdown...

The Embyro: Semi-surreal section in the middle before the whale song which is a bunch of kids playing which is played over the top of the jaunty Wright keyboard solo. Nice version.

Careful With That Axe, Eugene: During the first section there is a little bit of an issue with the sound, lets say it flutters for a second or two. Nothing major but easy to spot.  This one is annoying because the crescendo starts to build but stops about half way, you can tell theyare holding back a little so it is pretty unfulfilling.

Atom Heart Mother: Yeah brass, 'nuff said. Forcing myself to get past my dislike of the orchestrations on this song is a very good rendition and better than the studio one. Its more refined, you can tell is has been played a few times so it is not so rough around the edges (which when it comes to orchestrations is better). There is a fade out just after the 17 minute mark or so sounds like a track break fade out but the same song continues it only lasts 4 or 5 seconds, I wonder if this a recording error, if they thought the track was done.

Fat Old Sun: There is a section in the middle which fades out but it might be part of the song, it lasts enough for you to start reaching for the dial. The section after this has a really nice jam feel to it.

Worth picking up if you come across it, good beginners bootleg because of the quality.

Same as the original vinyl version though modified for CD reproduction, it looks like the manufacturer had access to the original vinyl art. Front: White cover with AHM cow, looking back while standing on a hand drawn road. Hand drawn city visible is the distance, and a stand of trees is to the left. "Atom Heart Mother" in original type at top, with hand lettered "goes on the road" cutting across it. Hand lettered "Pink Floyd appearing at Paris Theatre, London 70-71" in lower right corner (noticeably neater lettering than original vinyl). Back: White backdrop with hand lettered track listings, the times listed are incorrect. Lettering from vinyl has been totally redone for the CD, though much neater this time. Band personel are listed, and it is claimed to be a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies. Hand drawn building sillouhettes across the bottom. Inside: White booklet opens up to show four color shots of the stage from what looks like the DSOTM tour, back of booklet has a b&w photo from around 70-71, and the back of the tray lines has what looks like film strips containing various head shots of the individual band members, also on a white background. The CDs themselves are printed with a take off of the Harvest record label, Yellow and green with the lettering all hand done in the same style as the cover. Claims to be "Produced by Pink Floyd Fans". Really nice looking.

'The Wall In Dortmund' - February 13th, 1981 - Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Germany

Sound Quality: B-
Performance: B-
Overall: 2

Not a good boot, the recording is plagued with issues, some throughout, like the bass distortion and some occur a lot like the volume inconsistency.

The performance also has some technical issues which are noted in the track breakdown, the crowd is pretty non-irritating, there is one at the end of the 'Comfortably Numb' who makes some very strange noises and also in the 'MC' part that follows and finally at the end but it is not bad, just weird. Apart from these the performance isn't that great either, its alright but I have heard a lot better. Highlight is 'Empty Spaces' with nice intensity, especially from Roger who gave a great vocal delivery of some really great lyrics.

Track Breakdown...

MC/In The Flesh: Recording is a bit harsh and the intro in German was a refreshing change.

The Thin Ice: More frequency distortions but the vocals are very clear.

Another Brick In The Wall (part 1): Nice bongo work.

Mother: The starts is delayed by a technical hitch which Roger says they will work out. Although I support, wholeheartedly, the inclusion of these problems I wish they would separate the track out so it can be skipped if you wanted to. If this was as bootleg I wanted to revisit, I can do without that every time. The song starts around 2:30 and is good rendition, the solo is really good and lyrics very heartfelt.

Goodbye Blue Sky: Nice keyboard work from Rick on this. I have noticed that despite the keyboard work being understated on 'Animals' and 'The Wall' the live versions seem to feature it a lot more. I am uncertain as to why this is but it is certainly great to hear.

Young Lust: The sound gets a little dull compared to the brightness of the rest of the show so far. Nice rendition.

One Of My Turns: The starts sees a noticeable change in volume, getting louder and clearer but not as clear as it was. This is one of my favorite tracks from the album, this has a boat load of energy, really nice. Shame about the volume changes. Recording is more harsh though.

Don't Leave Me Now: Vocals sound distant, harshness is continuing, looks like it is how this will be for a while.

Goodbye Cruel World: Very low volume, had to turn the dial two clicks plus the lyrics don't start for almost a full minute. Technical issue.

Hey You: Volume down again, so it could be the show itself was the problem.

Is There Anybody Out There?: It appears to be another malfunction, Dave's acoustic work is almost non-existent there is some but it doesn't sound full so I suspect this is the secondary guitarist.

Comfortably Numb: I am trying hard to come up with a word to describe this and raunchy was what I get, it’s not the clean and precise sound that I am used to hearing, this was more hard edged. It was still great.

Run Like Hell: One for all the clappers in the audience says Roger and boy does the audience respond! This song sounds harsh and the bass, I think, sounds terrible really muffled, probably from frequency distortion of the recording equipment.

The Trial: For all the recording issues the effect of the wall coming down was pretty good.

Leave this one alone, it not awful but other, much better, choices out there.

'Kralingen Pop Festival, Holland (1st gen)' - 28th June, 1970 - Kralingen Pop Festival, Rotterdam, Holland

Sound Quality: A-
Performance: B
Overall: 3

There is a video for this which I have that is a better option but the audiop version presented in this bootleg is pretty good. The quality is pretty consistant throughout with a just a little fading in one part of 'Atom Heart Mother' The crowd is really good, you can hardly hear them just provides a good ambience.

The performance is dissapointing though in some respects it feels luike a throw back to the 1967 gigs with Syd, which although are really good from a rhythm standpoint really misses out on the tight, honed performance these circa 1970 tracks really need. 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' was the best of the bunch this time around which was a super spacey version, which I liked alot with good rhythm and good feel.

Track breakdown...

Astronomy Domine: Brashy sounding version but good none the less, about 40 seconds or so of tuning at the end

Green Is The Color: 30 seconds or so into the track it actually starts. Vocals are clear in the most part, a little bit sounds slightly distorted. There is a harshness to the recording which shows up in this song because of its, normally, gentle nature.

Careful With That Axe, Eugene: Does not sound that great to be honest, seems to lack energy, the recording seems to blend the sounds together which doesn't help too.

Tuneups: 4 minutes of not much at all.

Atom Heart Mother: Some talking by Roger, I think, at the start but I can't really make out what is being said, song starts after about 45 seconds. In the later stages there is some fades outs where the recording seems to phase a little bit as it were, its easy to spot but is not a big deal. Nice keyboard work by Rick on this band version and it is a little bit longer than the normal band version too. 30 seconds of tuneups at the end with some more talking which sounds like an anouncer, not the band.

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun: Vocals are a little bit low on the volume side, which isn't unusual but they can be heard. About 40 second of tunings at the end. which can be skipped it you are that way inclined.

A Saucerful Of Secrets: Drums could have been louder but a nice version, lots of improvisation without going overboard and losing a sense of harmony. About 2:45 at the end is some announcements, tuning and the crowd cheering for more.

Interstellar Overdrive: More from the announcer to start but thats pretty short and the music starts. Another similar performance of this track around this date, good though.

Announcer: Only part of this in Englsh and just included for completeness, nothing happens. I cant understand the guy for most of the time, there are some odd noises in the background which I can't identity. No music, no words from the band so can be skipped if you wish.

Good quality but forgettable bootleg (well compared to the others!), in my opinion, so not one to go out and hunt down.

'Hippy Happy Fair' - 13th November, 1967 - Oude Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands

Sound Quality: A-
Performance: A
Overall: 4

This felt like a real jam session, there was a definate groove to the whole performance, the recording was very good except for the lyrics, low on 'Set The Controls...' and barely audible on 'Scream Thy last Scream' but that didn't really matter, this is typical of the Floyd gigs at this time, loosely improvising around a theme more than playing songs.

The only exception was 'Set The Controls...', it is much faster than we all know and love which I am not sure it works quite as well, it seems to lose some of it's mysterious feel. Although this was released in 1968 so this occured before that, it was apprently recorded (at least the bulk of it) in August of 1967 which was before this so it wasn't a work in progress. I prefer the slower version myself.

'Interstellar Overdrive' was the highlight for me, again loosely based on the album version, this 14 minute sonic experience was really good.

I really wish I could have been to one of these gigs, you know the experience of the thing just the energy must have been amazing but sadly only a handful were recorded with Syd in the band which is a damn shame, also a damn shame that they didn't record themselves at least once.

This is a great example of a show with Syd, most of them have bad vocal volume so this si as good as any you are likely to find, being that the lyrics are not really a factor for most of these songs, it didn't effect the grade as much as if this were a 'Wall' show, for example.

'cass[Master]>HIFI>DAT*' - 15th April 1972 - The Sportatorium, Hollywood, Florida

Sound Quality: B+
Performance: B+
Overall: 3

This is a pretty good bootleg of the pre-release 'Dark Side Of The Moon', there are quite a few issues which drop it down but ultimately it is enjoyable to listen too. This work changed some, even during the 'Eclipsed' tour and this is a good early version featuring some interesting sound effects.

The performance is alright but not great, the stand out track, for me, was 'Any Colour You Like', Dave really goes to town on the guitar solo great work. Some of the tracks were much of a muchness and some including most of the encores were a little disappointing.

Track breakdown...

Breathe: Around the 2:30 mark there is a noise, not sure what it is but it is loud and my guess would be it occurred after recording but I can’t be sure.

On The Run (jam version): I really like this old jam and this version gets a really nice groove going.

Time: Has more of a groove to it than on the later album version but during the solo the guitars are a little low volume compared to the rest of the band.

The Mortality Sequence (Great Gig In The Sky): Scripture pretty audible and clear and overall the song was really mellow and achieved what I believe the band were aiming for.

Money: Sounds odd without the effects at the beginning for sure and there is also more keyboards evident than on the album version. The guitars a little low on this track too, where they are most evident so basically seems to be the whole show. Good bass work from Roger on this version though, really nice.

Us & Them: There is a lot of noise going on to start the track, I think some of it is sound effects and some crowd noise but they really blend together so it is hard to tell. Vocals are pretty low volume. There is also some odd noises too that seems to be on the recording as well what appears to be a cut around 3:45 or so, it is hard to make out in the section before the vocals, then comes in with the vocals, missing the first part. Now it is making sense, the second half of the song, the sound effects are played at a high volume and it sounds like a field reporter at a riot. I recall seeing a documentary where they talked about the 'violence sequence' that was the fore runner to this track, they showed a piece of footage that was said to be the inspiration that led Rick to compose the piece. It sound like it could be the same thing, or similar.

Brain Damage: Includes the bongo sounding backing beat, some crowd chatter for a second or two. There is also some audio clips playing to the end track going into the next one.

Eclipse: The audio over the top is a little loud so Roger's vocals line is drowned out a little. this occurs through the whole song. We finish off with more sound effects, a siren winding down and a church bell.

One Of These Days: Volume seems to increase, quality is comparable but could be a different source. There is a slight momentary fade out around 3 minutes or so. During the middle, quieter section, Dave seems to be messing around on his slide guitar, fun. This song overall is a little messy but has a nice raw edge to it. The transition to the next track is a little odd like two electronic sounding pulses.

Careful With That Axe, Eugene: Near the beginning it sounds like someone a little ways away from the recorder yells at someone to sit down, it is just once and is not a big deal. Just before 2:30 there is a total sound drop out for just a moment. The sound has some issues around 6:45 and a handful of seconds later too. The volume seems to be decreased as well. The performance lacks a little intensity which I apologize for using way too much in regards this song.

Echoes: There is a cross between a pop and a whistle right at the beginning which sounds like the recording at some point. When the second part starts there is some audience clapping but it soon dies out, thankfully. This is a pretty nice version.

Most of the this tour is a pretty bad quality and while this is not great the underlying recording is pretty good so worth picking up if you can find it.

Comment: cass[Master]>HIFI>DAT*
this is an untouched version, not dehissed, unlike the "Sportatorium" roio which is dehissed and speedcorrected. Speaking of speed, this sounds indeed like it is running too slow, but the pace sounds right thought... I guess it is rather a matter of pitch which is low.
Clear version anyway, especially compared to recorder 2. Just like "Sportatorium", this misses the final encore "Set the Controls" which has certainly never been taped by this taper.    -Furry_Animal

'Dogs And Sheeps' - April 26th, 1975 - LA Sports Arena, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Sound Quality: B+
Performance: A+
Overall: 4

I have 3 other bootlegs from this night so I hope one of them will be better. This is another in the category of oh what could have been. Two main issues - 'Money' is missing, presumably for space reasons and there is a problem on all the transitions on the second disk (and the last song on the first disk). The later of these two problems could well have been the digital source I got it from (I also can't seem to find another one) but for my reviews sound quality covers everything from the recording to my ears.

Apart from these two facts the bootleg was splendid, the quality was amazing (aside from the aforementioned issues) and the performance was awesome. The whole first disk is the highlight for me, really great versions of all the tracks.

Track breakdown...

Raving And Drooling: Really great version of the early form of 'Sheep', lots of fantastic keyboard work from Rick here and the song in general was really tight and clean with great feel and seemingly lots of enthusiasm from the band. Lyrics were very clear, even the start which is often not the case, no scripture part here during the slow section. There is a about a minute and a half of tuning at the end which can be skipped by those folks who don't like that. (you know who you are!)

You Gotta Be Crazy: Roger says something right near the start which I can't exactly make out, sounds like "You either got it or you won't". I think it is fair say these tracks lost something on the album without Rick's keyboard which is really understated on the whole 'Animals' album. More tuning at the end and Roger introduces the next track, also noting the previous track was a 'cruel Song'. This version did indeed seem to have more harsh lyrics to it. I feel the album version was a little more restrained.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 1-5): Rick is still on fine form, giving it some really nice freeform improvisation before the riff kicks in. Solid version, good.

Have A Cigar: Another winner, really nice bluesy feel. This tour and the 1977 one really show Dave's versatility.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 6-9): Some nice funky improvisation here on another stellar track. Roger ends the track by saying they are taking a break and also yelling at the people in yellow shirts (I presume security), he is on fine form. LOL.

On The Run: Some improvisation here, I think with the VC3 synth (which means most likely Roger) but could be Rick on the keyboards.

Time: A little on the odd side, the metronome sounding part stops early then picks back up again.

Great Gig In The Sky: Some nice improv. towards the end.

Money: Missing, Grrrrrr!

Any Colour You Like: Great version, keyboard and guitar work with even a little backing vocal work.

Echoes: Saxophone - cool! A great version again.

I will take a rain check on this one, there could well be other nights that don't have the issues this one does but until then pick it up if you stumble across it.
