'Beset By Creatures of the Deep' - 9th May 1969 - Southampton, England

Sound Quality: A-
Performance: B-
Overall: 3/5 Storage

Hopefully if I now mention is have ben stuck in a rut of mediocre boots I will have a change of luck. The one is pretty good sound quality there is a noticeable volume drop in the middle of CWTAE but other that that it is easily listenable. The small cut mentioned in the original info in ASOS is noticeable but only just, it sounds like they all come to a dead stop at the same time, it doesn't spoil the album in any way.

The performance isn't bad but pretty uninspiring in my opinion, the only real standout for me was 'Interstellar Overdrive' which had  lot of great improvisation on it and some different parts I had not heard before. The rest was ordinary. I feel I am becoming spoilt already in my process with a lot of bootlegs still to go.

Pick this one up if it presents itself to you but don't work for it.

Comments:
Not sure if the date is presented in US format (month/day/year) or European (day/month/year); package says 5/9/69. Can use a crosscheck reference (Miles) to confirm if they were in UK at this time on. A GREAT performance. No cuts on all tracks. IO is great, albeit without Syd. Astronomy and ASoS are also great. A lot of improvisations on these tracks Definitely complements the first half of Ummagumma. Rogers introduces some tracks, and after CWtAE he lets out a crackle reminiscent of Several Small Creatures and/or PowR TocH. Slight tape hiss during quiet sections. I notices most just at the beginning before all instruments are heard on Astronomy. Otherwise not noticeable. All instruments and vocals are clearly audible. -PIG1DO

There _are_ cut(s) in songs on this record, at least in my version. At 06:38 in ASoS (section 'Syncopated Pandemonium') there's a cut with 2 seconds of silence, and after that the song leaps back into 'Storm Signal'-section. Great performance though, despite this cut (which is btw the only I noticed on the record).

Violent and haunting version of IO, really great (as the commentor above mentioned). Mason really seems to enjoy this song and this style of playing, and so do I.

Sound quality is really good considering the age and origin of the master tape.

Spoken parts/announcements: Between AD & CwtAE, Dave: "Thank you." Roger: "This is a much newer thing than that one, which is very old. And it's instrumental. It's called 'Careful with that axe Eugene'. It has got a very quiet start."

Between IO & Green, Dave: "Thank you."

Between Beset by creatures & ASos, Roger (or Dave): "Thank you." Roger: "This is going to be the last thing we do and it's the title [song/show?] of the last album we released, and it's called 'A saucerful of secrets'."

After ASoS, Roger: "Thank you."

The 2 seconds long cut in ASoS I mentioned earlier appears at 44:33 into the record, which makes me think that it's most likely caused when the person(s) recording the show inserted a new tape or switched sides of the tape (because of the 45-min standard there usually is on tapes).

At the end of AD there it sounds like there are vinyl pops and clicks, like it's been remastered from a vinyl. There's even a larger click which makes the song go back 2 or 3 seconds, making you hear the applause for AD twice. However I don't think it's been mastered from vinyl, because I haven't noticed these pops and clicks on other tracks on the record. It's not a very disturbing thing, and I think the record is really great. Too bad about the cut in ASoS, though, because it's occurs just where Gilmour is showing off his cool guitar w/ feedback&echo stuff.

The crowd is polite (as always at that time), no shouting or whisteling during songs. Only small talks here and there during the whole record, but it's never disturbing. Sounds just like the band's playing in front of a picnic or something :-) . Judging from the amount of applause it seems to be not a very large audience. -ANDREAS

It appears that the actual date for this show is May 9 1969, not September 5 1969. -EDEN

'A Momentary Lapse in Lahti' - 10th June 1989 - Lahti, FInland

Sound Quality: B
Performance: B-
Overall: 3/5 Storage

This is very much a missable bootleg, not bad but not good, go watch/listen to 'Delicate Sound Of Thunder'. The sound quality was ok, the volume varies throughout which is annoying but ok, the worst part is the tape flip during 'Sorrow' which is unforgivable!

The performance was ok, again nothing to write home about but not bad, there are a couple of times they have issues with the equipment and each time Dave does some strumming on the guitar but it nothing special, never breaks into a tune or give us some classic 'Smoke On The Water' riff or anything like that. The mention in the info on the 'Johnny B. Goode' riff is sketchy at best, maybe a few bars but not that you would really recognize it. They occur at the start of both 'Us & Them' and 'Money'.

Highlights…

Sorrow: Solo is a little longer, the tape flip is annoying.

On The Turning Away: Really suffers from the volume up and down problem, good version though, real shame.

Welcome To The Machine: Not on the DSOT album so a nice break, ,good version with some extra backing vocals. I had never heard this post-Waters version before.

Money: Nice long version, really nice middle section with some good band jamming' stuff.

Comfortably Numb: This was a pretty good version, a little rough but then that is ok by me.

Better boots out there for sure, will find one soon from this time period.

Comments: This show is worth having for the following reasons:

1. It was Floyd's first (and I believe only) stop in Finland, which Gilmour notes at one point.
2. This is the complete show, with the exception of tape flips.
3. This strays a bit from the strict, keep-the-music-synched-to-video,  never improvise nature of the "Momentary Lapse Of Reason" and "The Division Bell" shows due to the "technical difficulties" that cause a restart of 'Us And Them' and a good deal of time between tracks. As a result, we are treated to a really nice, lengthy solo at the start of the track by Rick, and some interesting noodling by David, to include a 'Johnny B. Goode' riff.

One good marker to determine the source of this tape vice other possible recorders is the gasping, choking sounds of someone near the taper just before the lead-in to 'One Of These Days'.

'Brainwaves Coherence' - !4th December 1974 - Bristol, England

Sound Quality: B+
Performance: B+
Overall: 3/5 Storage

The sound quality is all over the place with this one in the first half so check out the track breakdown for those songs but a pretty ordinary performance the highlight would have been the complete version of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' but alas the quality on that was the worst of the bootleg.

I have to say the background vocalists on this tour were not that great, the versions of 'Great Gig In The Sky' seems to be a real problem for them, in my humble opinion. I haven't listed all tracks in the breakdown just some that were highlights and also the sound quality differences from the main score.

Track Breakdown.

Raving And Drooling: Best quality of the disk, good version there is some weird stuff at the start, not sure what is going on and some tuning at the end which can be skipped.

You've Gotta Be Crazy: Two minutes of tunes ups at the end which can be skipped, not much going on, pretty good version.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond: Such a shame, the volume fades out throughout the song and this was a really good version of the whole piece played in it's entirety.

Great Gig In The Sky: I have already mentioned the background singer issue but this is a good version, pretty jazzy in places which works.

Money: Really long guitar solo - loved it.

Us & them -> Any Colour You Like - Sounds like a cut or is a real bad transition between these two tracks but nothing too noticeable. It is noted in the original info now that a read it thru.

Any Colour You Like: Good bass work, really mellow version to begin with then gets funky, I liked it.

Totally missable bootleg.

'Interstellar Zappadrive' - 25th October 1969 - Amougies, Belgium

Sound Quality: B+
Performance: B+
Overall: 3/5 Storage

Good sound quality overall but a couple of issues which knock it down to a B+, the sound is a little muffled and not as clear as some other ROIO I have reviewed from this time period. Some other issues noted on the track breakdown too.

The performance is historic, the legendary Frank Zappa joins the boys on Interstellar Overdrive and what a feast for the senses it turns out to be. Overall though most of the songs didn't really pop for me, pretty ordinary and again there are some better choices out there. ('Since We were Teenagers' still still my ROIO of choice at this point)

Track Breakdown...

Astronomy Domine: This made me hopeful of the quality, it is better than the rest and this is a good version.

Green Is The Colour: Both the vocals and acoustic guitars are low volume which is the focal part of this song. Shame.

Care With That Axe, Eugene: The recording quality seems to tone down the transition section in the song and leaves this version flat and pretty lifeless.

Tune Ups: Frank takes the stage and tunes up, nothing much goes on though can be skipped.

Interstellar Overdrive: 20 minute version of this classic track, loved it and Frank does a good job joining in. Great version, historic moment. Definite highlight of the disk.

Tuning: skip it, nothing happens

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun: There are some chunks where you hear talking, which is shame because the song is pretty good. One is about 15 seconds, the other is just a couple but is pretty distracting and ruins a pretty good version of this song.

Then we have some bonus tracks which are a soundboard recording but still the quality is not that great

Green Is The Colour: Again the vocals are pretty low volume and a little muffled.

Careful With That Axe, Eugene: A little muffled but nice intensity, so this highlights the problem with the audience recording.

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun: Better with out the talking but still nothing spectacular.

All round a disappointment, but should be heard for the version of 'Interstellar Overdrive' with Frank.

Notes: Also speedcorrected and pitch corrected version of the original seed of the audience recording, slightly at diff speed than "Let's Be Frank..." though. The disc comes with bonus material from the supposed radio broadcast (soundboard source), but is not mentioned as a D2 on the artwork. -Furry_Animal

The mono audience recording that surfaced early 2006 was running too slow. A 96.5% speed correction was performed in order to have the correct speed (taking the live Ummagumma CD as the pitch reference). Some flaws of the original recording were corrected also (some very short "holes" in the recording were manually corrected, and some level fluctuations were adjusted for listening pleasure). A slight EQ was performed in order to have a more balanced frequency spectrum, and finally a manual deglitching was performed. Talking about the slight difference of speed when comparing to "Let's Be Frank", this is probably due to the pitch reference that was used. When comparing Let's Be Frank with the official tracks on the Ummagumma live CD, Let's Be Frank seems slightly too slow (but it's less noticeable than on the original recording, which was about one half-step too slow). -MOB

'M502' - 25th Feb 1971 - Grosser Saal Musik Halle, Hamburg, Germany

Sound Quality: A+
Performance: B
Overall: 4/5 Storage

I have been have a run of good luck with the quality of these bootlegs and this one continues that run with an excellent sounding ROIO. There is a little bit of static for a second or two on 'Green In The Color' but other than that it is perfect.

The performance is good too, not as good as some I have heard but good versions of all the songs played. The Storage aspect comes down to personal taste as to sticking around in my iTunes, I guess with all these good sounding ROIO's I can afford to be pickier than I thought I would get to be and there are other bootlegs with these songs on it that I prefer.

Highlights...

Careful With That Axe Eugene: This is a great version super high intensity version, especially the screams, great job and a contender if I would make a compilation.

Cymbaline: Good version of this but the main thing this track brought me was an explanation to what was going on in the 'Since We Were Teenagers' ROIO that a reviewed a short while ago. The break in the middle is for a few minutes of sound effects that were played during the song live using the famed Azimuth Coordinator. (for you those who have never heard of this piece of equipment it allows the band to control the music levels all round the room with the aid of a joystick type device, so the
footsteps, for example, would move around the auditorium) The original piece was written as part of The Main, The Journey' and was entitled 'Nightmare' so these sound effects are supposed to help set the mood. On the other ROIO this was either very feint or the not routed through the soundboard (I believe that was a soundboard recording). Thanks to wiki on that one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cymbaline

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun: Good version here but the volume on the vocals is a little on the low side

Atom Heart Mother: Includes the orchestrations which I dislike (as stated in a previous review) but this is a faithful recreation of the album version if you like that one.

This is a real shame the quality is excellent but the performance is lacking for me. If you come across this one and you don’t have a lot of other choices then pick it up but in my opinion, even though the 'Cymbaline' sound effects are missing, the 'Since We Were Teenagers' bootleg is a better performance with almost as good sound quality.

'Echoes In The Garden' - 18th June 1975 - Boston, USA

Sound Quality: A+
Performance: A
Overall: 5/5 iTunes

This is a great bootleg of a great show, the sound is amazing, if I was forced to be picky the vocals on the Dark Side portion of it were a little tiny bit muffled but it was an absolute joy to listen to this one.

The performance was brilliant as well, good amount of improvisation with Dave having a really great night with excellent solos throughout. Fine form, the only negative I could find was the wailing on 'Great Gig In The Sky', it was little off but other than that stunning.

The whole boot was a highlight but a couple of tracks warrant a special mention…

You've Gotta Be Crazy: This song is evolving before our ears and this ROIO is great, lots of variations, even from the original version on the British Winter Tour '74 ROIO I reviewed recently.

Have A Cigar: Really love this funky version with a truly great solo.

On The Run: Lots of differences from the album version.

Money: Great guitar and sax solos.

Any Colour You Like: I agree with the review on the original info, this is a really nice version really mellow and bluesy.

Pick this one up people, it is great bootleg.

Comments: AWESOME!! It's from a different and better source tape (on back of the CD it states their source is directly from the master reel to reel) than Crazy Diamond! The down note is that its spaced out onto 3 CD's for no reason whatsover. An extra 25.00 for nothing. They easily could have fit it onto 2 CDs. -MIKE

I never thought that there will ever be an audience recording which could be rated SUP, but here it is. This is simply the best sound quality you will ever encounter not coming from a soundboard or broadcast. I got goosebumps listening to this flawless RoIO and great performance. Listen to "Any Colour you like" and you will never be the same. Get it, get it. -HERWIG

'Violence In Birmingham' - Various dates in 1970, various locations

Sound Quality: D+
Performance: B
Overal: 1/5 Storage

This is mainly let down by sound quality, it really is bad and it makes this ROIO one that is not pleasurable to listen to at all, lots of sound distortion thoughout. The performance of most of the songs was good but the 'B' rating mainly comes from historic value of the fourth track in the first set; 'Sysyphus', a work by Richard Wright from the 'Ummagumma' studio album.

This is the only known bootleg of this track and only 4 performances ever, means that if you like the song then you better get this bootleg and put up with the quality. I do not really care much for it myself, it is really a failed experiment like a lot of the work in that period.

This is a combination of a handful of sources so I will include sound quality type comments in my track breakdown if the diverge from the overall score.

SET ONE

1. The Embryo: Lots of distortion, the lyrics are very hard to hear but the whale calls (if you have read some of my other reviews you will know my feelings on those) are played underneath a jaunty bass line and a nice keyboard solo.

2. Main Theme From 'More': There are no lyrics on this track which is always better for these types of recordings and is a pretty rare performance of this track and it is not bad. There are about 20 seconds of tunes ups at the end, nothing happens so you can hit that skip button once the track ends.

3. Careful With That Axe, Eugene: Lots of distortion, transfer to vinyl very evident, pops and crackles also sounds like a small cut towards the end. What was very odd was the lack of screams on this version!

4. Sysyphus: As mentioned is a very rare, sound quality like the rest, poor indeed.

5. Violent Sequence: This is a 25 minute epic has poor sound quality which does not help with this kind of piece. It is improvisation galore but the sound quality blends it all together. Of those you know are unaware this piece of music was written for the movie 'Zabriskie Point' but was never used. It later became the basis for 'Us and Them' and about 18 minutes in you get the start of that which is interesting.

SET TWO

1. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun: Really nice spacey version, shame about the sound quality, same as the rest, which means bad.

2. The Amazing Pudding: The sound quality is quite a bit lower than the rest but once I turned it up a bit the sound quality was a little better then the other tracks, still bad though. There is also a tape warp which does not help but does not last too long, there are better versions with much better sound quality out there.

3. Interstellar Overdrive: would have been a great version if not for the quality again, really bad distortion.

4. Blues: This was even worse quality, close to the worst I have heard - horrible sound distortion.

As stated, if you don't like that one song, stay clear. One for the completists if ever there was one.

Comments: times given are actual length of songs, not track times given on cd.

This is the first time (that I know of) that this significant show has been available on cd. This show is significant for several reasons. First, it contains a very early performance of Atom Heart Mother and Embryo (I had not realized until just now that Embryo had its concert debut at the same time as AHM, plus or minus a show or two) This show would be around the 10th or so performance of each song, so it's interesting to compare these early performances to later ones. The second reason why this show is so important is that it contains several rarely performed songs; Sysyphus, The Violent Sequence, and Main Theme (from More). Each of these songs had only a handful of performances. The fact that all three were played in Birmingham is significant, especially since there are only two documented shows where this occurred. It appears that this show was the final performance of Sysyphus, as well as one of the last for the other two. The Violent Sequence was given a very lengthy performance, at 25:32 minutes (probably its longest). The March 13, 1970 Blues is one of the earliest performances of this song. I'm not sure if anyone else but me cares about this sort of information, but I just love it.

The recording quality is not very good, though it is not so bad that it is unlistenable (sound quality was NOT factored into my Excellent quality rating). It sounds a little muffled at times, though at other times sounds quite good. Interstellar Overdrive (from another show) appears to have the best sound (plus a really good performance), and Blues (again from a different show) the worst. Blues is slower and a little heavier than the other versions I've heard. At this point of AHM's development (then called The Amazing Pudding), there was a drum solo featured at the end. This version has a two minute drum section before the source cuts off. Some songs appear to be cut off slightly at the end, though nothing too bad. Also, there is drop in high frequencies when the vocal section of AHM begins and which seems to last the entire section. The result is a very muffled sound that makes the vocal section hard to enjoy.

This roio is part of a continuing release of shows often previously unavailable on cd (at least in a very, very long time). The same people have also released Childhood's End (March 7, 1973) and The Man Live in Paris (January 23, 1970), among others. Word from the source is that another rare, early 1970 show (January 18, 1970 at Croydon, England) is being prepared for release. The problem is that, depending on where you live, you may not be able to get your hands on these releases. The January/February 1970 concerts show Floyd in a period of mild transition. The Man and The Journey (as a complete suite) had been permanently dropped from their set list. They temporarily dropped Cymbaline and tried out five new songs in an effort to develop a new set list that would form the basis for all shows through the end of 1971, with a few minor changes. Given the rarity of the material played at the Birmingham show and the fact that this show has not been commercially available on cd in a very long time, if ever, this release is a must have for hardcore Floyd fans if you can find it, even though the sound quality is not high. Rated as essential collection material. - Scott

'The Live Bell' - 30th March 1994 - Joe Robbie Stadium Miami, FL

Sound Quality: B+
Performance: C
Overall: 3/5 Storage

This was the first live performance from the Floyd on the 1994 tour so I guess I should give them a break, There are some missed some cues, some fluffed lyrics and other minor timing issues but it doesn't happen often and the band handles it well. There wasn't enough improvisation, it was pretty standard show, not the best, not the worst so I gave it a middle of the road rating  3/5 overall.

The biggest issue for me was the audience, they are borderline annoying is some spots. I know they are enjoying the show and all but come on. It wasn't too bad, but bad enough.

Here are the highlights.
  • Lost for words was a pretty rare track and this is a basic version, not too much improv and annoying person clapping a long at the start.
  • Sorrow had some reverb thing going on, planned or not, I do not know but it  detracted from the clarity of those notes that hold you in their grip.
  • Great Day For Freedom had a nice extended keyboard solo which was cool.
  • The the ultimate happened, the recorder went from an A- to a B+ on this one, there were volume problems on the solo in comfortably numb!
  • The sound check that interesting and can skipped unless you are obsessive! ;-)
There are better shows, this one was the first of the tour so it has some historical bonus but I will not be keeping it in iTunes.

'Since We Were Teenagers' - 1st May 1970 - Santa Monica, CA

Sound Quality: A+
Performance: A
Overall: 5/5 iTunes here we come (see review for a caveat though)

Here is another golden ROIO and part of the reason why I wanted to undertake this exercise. It is great, most of the issues mentioned in the original info were not problems for me and the sound is excellent, one of the best ROIO I have heard that is recorded from the audience with perfect amount of participation and there are no spoilt tracks due to talking or other issues, anything there is being so minor it didn't trouble me at all.

The performance is great, it really could be A+, it is just personal preference really, ASOS and CWTAE are not the kind of way I like the track to go but, like I said, just my taste. I will be keeping this in iTunes for sure, although I will be unchecking the tune ups so they do not sync to my iPod or play as part of the album, there is really no need.

This one warrants a track breakdown…

Set One.

1. Grantchester Meadows: This is a fairly good version, not my favorite track but this is a solid version, no issues.

2. Astronomy Domine: The vocals are little on the muted side by it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of this track, there is an extended keyboard section in the middle I haven't heard before (although I am just starting my journey and haven't listened to many of bootlegs from this era) and it was nice and refreshing.

3. Tune Ups: can be skipped nothing really happens

4. Cymbaline: This is a long version but that is because something happens after about 8 minutes there is something going on but I cant tell what it is, the music picks back up after 3 minutes or so and there are tune ups for about 30 seconds at the end, the info makes no mention of it either, so not sure about that one! But putting that aside, great version.

5. The Amazing Pudding: This is the would become the monstrosity that is 'Atom Heart Mother' and that is a real shame. The crap they added over the top of the basic piece, in my view anyway, ruined it on the album. This is a good version and really demonstrates that long standing point completely. It has all the good elements and none of the bad. Splendid!

Set Two.

1. Tune Ups: skip it, nothing interesting

2. The Embryo: The whales are back but there is other stuff going on over the top, most of the time an nice upbeat keyboard line and also some interesting drumming, neither of which I had heard before. Liked it. Good version of this track, liked it a lot.

3. Green Is The Colour: The cymbals are little heavy, if I have to be over critical and there is a little distortion on the recording on the louder sections but not distracting and this is a great rendition.

4. Careful With That Axe, Eugene: This is a spaced out, laid back version and is missing the intensity of some of the other performances I have heard of this well known track which is a real shame and is such an important factor to me but this is just personal preference and some might like that, still a good version.

5. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun: What a turn around from the last track, this is high energy with a great transition to the slower section, great contrast

6. Interstellar Overdrive: Another great version here lots of energy and great changes of pace makes this version one of the best I have heard.

7. A Saucerful Of Secrets: The start is really quiet at normal volume which means you don't really hear much going on until over a minute into the track then you have a full on 20 minute improvisation-fest that is classic 1968 Floyd but still retains the framework that we know and love and the end is really good. This rides the line of too much improv and crosses it occasionally but it was, none the less, a good version of this track.

Seek this out, it is a great, top rated, ROIO and is a must for all fans.

Magna Qualitas Records is proud to present "Since We Were Teenagers", this fully restored and remastered recording from Santa Monica as our fourth release.  Due to our continuing work on everything related to Zabriskie Point, which led to the new revision of the Omayyad album, we've decided to complete the restoration of this excellent recording.  GBC torrented this recording (provided by Rudy and M.M.) originally a while back, and his notes reflect the many instances of dropouts, damages and cuts in the tape.  All this has been restored here using pieces of other shows or relocating pieces from this show.

Originally Grantchester Meadows only ran about 30 seconds.  Apparently that is where the taper started recording.  We have patched the majority of the song in from the previous show in San Francisco on April 29, but since the very beginning of that fades in we decided to restore that as well from the KQED tape.  We wanted the birds before the song to be there.  The 30 seconds of the song that existed on the tape for this show are all there, but now the whole song exists in a form that is nearly impossible to tell its from more than one show.  from 0 to 0:34 April 30 - KQED.  From 0:34 to 7:13 April 29 - Fillmore East.  From 7:13 to 7:37 (end) May 1 - Santa Monica

Astronomy Domine had a small part missing due to a damaged portion of the tape.  This was patched with a piece from slightly earlier in the song.  The buildup was a bit oversaturated and was all at one continuous loud volume, so this was readjusted to better reflect the gradually increasing intensity of the song.

The original little patch from Santa Monica  1970-10-23 is still in place in Cymbaline.  It was done so well I can't even tell where it is, so why mess with perfection?

A dull spot in the tape at about 14 minutes into The Amazing Pudding was repaired.

The missing part of Careful was spliced in from Port Talbot 1969-12-06, curiously this concert was during the Sessions for Zabriskie Point. We searched long and hard through dozens of shows to find a tape where the performance was similar enough to the one at Santa Monica (and with similar sound quality) to fill the missing section.  Quite a lot was missing, so it had to be done. The patch exists from 2:33 to 3:48.

Drop-outs and other anomalies were cleaned up or otherwise repaired.  The volume of the whole thing was adjusted in various places to make the dynamics more pleasant, and because the tape sounds like the taper was adjusting the gain on the fly as the show went on in order to compensate for very quiet passages.  A lot of the between song banter and tuneups and the tape effects during Cymbaline were very quiet, so they were brought up a bit.  The distorted sections of the show were carefully restored to avoid a lot of the oversaturation they originally contained.  Several spots where the high end dulled down a bit, likely from deterioration of the master, were EQd separately and patched in in order to compensate for the tonal changes.  Noise Reduction was carefully applied in three stages, and the whole thing now appears for the first time in stereo due to the usage of a very sophisticated and well sounding (although freely available) stereo processing plugin.  The tape flips were all patched by relocating audience from different parts of the show so the whole thing is now a continuous piece for each set.

This release is certainly not perfect.  Many wrinkles and crumples were present in the master tape, and although we did our best, there's not a lot that can be done to fix them.  It is, however, probably the best it has ever sounded since we were teenagers, maybe even as it ever will...

Transfer: Reel[1] > Sony DAT > DAT(0) > Audigy 4 Pro > Nero Wav Editor > CDWav >

Ah, forget about any other version of this show. Forget even about the nice tracks from the Omay Yad LP. Straight from a 1st Generation Reel, comparing it to the other versions around wouldnt be fair for the other releases, because this never sounded as good as it does with this version. You wont find a better version of this concert till the master reels gets transferred. And as if this wasnt enough, now we can hear Green is the Colour, Careful and Saucerful which werent available till today. It gets a bit distorted on the louder parts but it's absolutely listenable and the definition is still very good, i can live with that. Bass is really good but lacks a bit of highs, still, it has excellent brightness and definition overall. Another source with better highs would make a better difference even.

Only editing on this recording was on AD, removing some damaged portion at  4:16-4:20m and over Cymbaline, M.M. removed 'the lines converging where you stand' till the chorus part and patched it with a bif ot Santa Monica 23.10.70. The common 'Santa Monica' bootleg has the complete Cymbaline with the original drop-outs and cuts. Also, i have a couple of transfers from fan tapes that have some dropouts at the beginning of AD, that anomalies are not present here. Also, Careful has an skip at 2:36m and i think it might be missing around a minute cos it jumps suddenly from the quiet ambience to a few bars before the scream. ASoS has another skip towards the end. These skips/cuts are not from CDs.

Spectrum reveals that something happened above the 16khz, i think it has something to do with the mics used that night, transfer equipment or the Reel itself. If you want more info about this, go to the thread i started about this here at Y. Anyway now you all will have it and will be able to make your own conclusions. M.M. states on his notes (you'll see them in the back artwork) that
the reels were starting to deteriorate so that might be the true reason.

'British Winter Tour 74' - 19th Nov 1974 - Trentham Gardens, Stoke On Trent, England

Sound Quality: A-
Performance: A-
iTunes: 4/5 Keep

This one is a historic event, the first performance of the tracks which would later become 'Sheep' and 'Dogs' and the also the first time 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' was introduced as such. (They performed a piece called 'Shine On' on the French tour in June of 1974)

The show is part of the whole concert and features the three tracks previously mentioned, SOYCD being played as the complete work, but the sound quality is very good on the whole. The original notes indicate this was taken from vinyl and it does show, you can hear some pops and also on SOYCD you have, what sounds like, a scratch on the disk, but it is still infinitely listenable.

The volume on 'Raving And Drooling', the first track, and also SOYCD is a little low, where as 'You Gotta Be Crazy', track two, was good, which meant I had to turn the volume up on tracks one and three but down for the second on. Just a minor inconvenience but I thought I would mention it, I will be adjusting the volume in iTunes for sure.

The only other problem was the vocals were a little muffled, which seems to be par for the course for these things, but with tracks like R&D and YGBC the lyrics are pretty tough to follow, so it gets my overall A- for sound.

The performance got an A-, the material was new and there was some interesting things in SOYCD, there was some really nice drumming and also the keyboards/organ were more stated and flamboyant than on the final album, both of which were great.

Definitely search this one out, really good to hear material before it is been really nailed down, work in progress as it were. Great stuff.

Comments: Finally, this gem of the '74 concert in Trentham Gardens shows up on cd. As it is copied directly from the lp, sometimes scratches and other unwanted noises appear. Not that is is too disturbing, the lp-source must have been in pretty good condition. Sound quality is VG+, a little thin on the bass and a bit muttered. Shine On is in one piece. The performance is pretty tight, and it's always nice to hear the nine parts of SOYCD together as they always should have been, imho. I recommend it. - Oscar

'The Great Gig On The Moon' - 12th March 1972 - Sapporo, Japan

Sound Quality: A
Performance: B+
Overall: 4/5 iTunes

This is a good performance and great sound quality, audience noise is perfect and not annoying at all,  from a show from before DSOTM was released, you get the old school version here complete with 'On The Run' jam session and also the 'The Mortality Sequence' the place of Great Gig In The Sky.

The original info says this is the best show from 1972, well I have a bunch to go thru but this one is a pretty solid 4/5, mainly let down by a fairly ordinary performance. I think the commentators on the info must not have heard this version before!

The highlights for me are the old style 'On The Run' and 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' but here are the notable points...

On The Run: This is the jam version, also known as 'The Travel Sequence', that was a part of the live performances before the vcs3 synth inspired musing that it became. I actually think the jam session is nicer to listen to on the whole but I agree with the vcs3 version being on the album for the feeling of paranoia it conveys and over all is a better experience with good quality sound. But I wouldn't have minded if the Floyd had cranked this out occasionally in the 1994 live performances!

Time: The lower register part of the lyrics seem a little off to me, but it isn't too bad ands they lyrics are indeed slight different as mentioned in the original info, ok so I did need to look up the word supine, it basically means to lay on your back for those of you who are interested.

Great Gig In The Sky: The old 'Religious Piece' or 'The Mortality Sequence', an organ solo with some scripture being quoted, I can’t seem to find what the scripture passage is and I am not sure if it changed, the words are not that clear on that recording. I prefer the real version, such a haunting, beautiful tune. I am glad they changed it.

Money: The sound effects are just pretty repetitive, I much prefer the variety on the album and later performances but it doesn't detract from the show at all. Good bass work. also the first solo is a sax solo and he guitar solo is great, got a real nice fuzzy sound.

Us & Them: This is an ok version, it has some vocal flourishes in there I do not care for but it isn't too bad, also one section is Dave wailing for some reason, still getting the kinks worked out.

One Of The Days - Not the best version I ever heard but pretty good, a little low on energy in my opinion, the first half at least, the second half was better. (compare this to the Return of the Sons Of Nothing bootleg which I reviewed earlier this month to see my point.)

Careful With That Axe, Eugene: It is s very toned down version until the screaming, Roger is in fine form, I think this is Roger's unique talent of seeing the big picture and gauging the overall feel of a song brilliantly and knowing how to jerk the listener out of their comfort zone when he wants to. The transition, because of the low key nature of the first section, is terrific. Great version.

Comments: The times of the songs on the back cover, are different from the the times on the CD, and the real times. On the CD, there are some errors on the separation of the songs.

BRILLIANT!!!! On the Run is completly different, and The Great Gig is also different (the beggining of TGGiTS seems like the end of SOS, when R.Wright plays beautiful chords on the organ, then there is something said, and then it's like the early years, like Interstelar Overdrive ).

D.G. and R.Wright sing at the same time in 'Time', but the melody they sing is different from the one on DSoTM. Also, R.Wright instead of saying "Tired of lying in the sunshine..." says something like "Lying supine in the sunshine..."

The initial effects of 'Money' are different.

'Brain Damage' is not complete: they don't sing the second part from "The lunatic is in my head..." to "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon." -RICARDO

My copy was the Psychedelicmania show of 29 April 1970. Apparently, there has been reports of people with the same problem, and the reverse -- buying Psychedelicmania and getting Great Gig on the Moon. In other words, try before you buy, if you can. I got this at a convention, so I'll just have to bitch to Teddy Bear Records ... -ANONYMOUS

This is great, excellent recording. Some audience talking in quiet bits -- my Japanese isn't good enough to hear what is being said. A few problems with timing when two or more vocal lines at the same time, but nothing too annoying. Love the guitar jam version of On The Run. Very atmospheric version of CWtA,E. Excellent, recommended. -KeithC

The best 72 cd I know of. Far better than TSP's, Best of Tour 72. This is one you don't want to let get away as long as you get the right cd. - Greg

'Soundboard on the Wall' - 9th August 1980

Sound Quality: B (great except tape weirdness)
Performance: C
Overall: 3/5 Storage

This is another soundboard recording that is basically spoilt by a tape issue towards the end of the first disk and into the start of the second disk and it wasn't a great performance, pretty ordinary all round.

There is also a low tape hiss for some reason but it is not that bad and you can tune it out pretty easily. This is my second Wall show bootleg, I have plenty more to go thru both have 3/5 so far and I would still favor the one put out officially at this point.

Here is the breakdown of anything notable…

  • In The Flesh?: The very start is cut off so it is jarring, not a good start
  • The Thin Ice: has some performance issues but not bad on the whole.
  • Another Brick p1: Nice long version, sounds like some minor tape issues though
  • Another Brick p2: Some static, also gets muffled at one point but this is a good version, nice guitar and keyboard solos and the bass is great, really clear. A real nice jam by the guys
  • Mother: Dave's vocal fade out but I think that was at the show rather than a recording issue, this is a nice longer version with an extended solo.
  • Young Lust: A little ragged but that suits the track well. Rick's keyboard is nicely evident and the whole song has a good bluesy feel to it. Great version of the track.
  • Another brick p3: Liked this version
  • Goodbye Cruel World: Tape issues start like the tape gets warped or stretched.
  • Hey You: Tape problems continue and Dave messes up at the start of the second verse, but not too noticeable.
  • Comfortably Numb: Some unwanted feedback, not good for this song and overall an ok version.
  • Run Like Hell: When the song is done Roger says 'We always like to do something for the disco fans.' That crazy English sense of humor. ;-)

This recording is the best recording that we can just download. This recording is a pure soundboard recording without any further questions.
Some people say that this a good audience recording and remasterd. Can you tell. Listen, do you think this is an audience recording?
This recording was diginally remastered with good eqiptment. Like they ever needed to remaster it in the first place.

'The Return Of The Sons Of Nothing' - 15th Nov 1972, Boeblingen

Sound Quality: A+
Performance: A+
Overall: 5/5 iTunes

Simply a stunning bootleg, this one is amazing, After slogging my way thru the last review this was a pleasure for me to hear three classic tracks performed unbelievably well, great versions all round.

The sound quality is great, the tape hiss talked about in the original info, I couldn't even hear, maybe he has his speakers up really loud. The is one small cut out at the end of 'Careful with That Axe, Eugene' but it really is minor.

Get this ROIO, search it out, it is an absolute must for all true Floyd fans!

NOTE: There is another bootleg with the same name, you want the single disk one from 1972, I have the other one and I will review that also in the fullness of time.

Comments:
This seems to be hard to get, and that's a shame! The clear sound is only disturbed by some tape hiss. Very few crowd noise. "One Of These Days" is an absolute killer. The band was in a really fantastic mood this evening! For curiosity: "Echoes" is announced by Roger as: "Looking Through The Knotholes In Grannys Wooden Leg".

Recorded at Boblingen November 15th 1972, this reaches EX+ for sound tape source and packaging with notes on the show itself. This is a single CD (missing the Dark Side half of the show). -BD (#24)

I consider myself very lucky to have been able to get a copy of this one; I believe it may have been one of the first Floyd RoIOs to come out on CD. Other than some hiss (of the kind you stop noticing very quickly), the sound is very clear and full. All three tracks are good, but my favorite is CWTAE, with a first-rate 'mad Scotchman' act and some great screams by the inimitable Roger. My only quibble is how much more of the show they could've put on the disc, but better to leave off DSotM and keep these three tracks than the other way around... - MT

I picked this up for 14 and it was well worth it, even though there are only three songs on it. One of These Days is thunderingly good. Careful With That Axe Eugene far exceeds the studio version - Roger is ranting away into an echo-drenched microphone, and Echoes is pretty much flawless. there s no date given, but it doesn t have the echoes saxophone solo that was on the random precision roio, so it s presumably pre-Dark Side (?)  There s a fade-out at the end of Eugene, before Echoes starts. It also says limited edition 2000 copies , but i wonder if this is true. DEFINITELY worth buying. - Seb.

'Keep Smiling People' - 1968, Amsterdam and Rome

Sound Quality: F
Performance: C (can't really tell, see sound quality grade)
Overall Grade: 1/5 The deepest of all storage

This is about as bad as it gets for ROIO, the quality is absolutely hideous, it was a test of my will and staying power to sit through the whole thing. This album contains songs from two different shows and I kept hoping it would switch to the other show and be better, it did not get better and I couldn't even tell it had switched.

Now I know this is from 1968 and I understand equipment to make these kinds of recordings was not good but that doesn't mean you have to listen to this either so save yourself the agony, sure the first track is an early version of 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' but to be honest I couldn't hear any resemblance of that song and with the poor quality I couldn't tell a whole lot of much of anything.

There were a couple of tracks which seems to be well performed, but the vocals were barely audible, sometimes I was not even sure that there were the vocals on some tracks.

Avoid this, don't waste your time!
