'Hippy Happy Fair' - 13th November, 1967 - Oude Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands

Sound Quality: A-
Performance: A
Overall: 4

This felt like a real jam session, there was a definate groove to the whole performance, the recording was very good except for the lyrics, low on 'Set The Controls...' and barely audible on 'Scream Thy last Scream' but that didn't really matter, this is typical of the Floyd gigs at this time, loosely improvising around a theme more than playing songs.

The only exception was 'Set The Controls...', it is much faster than we all know and love which I am not sure it works quite as well, it seems to lose some of it's mysterious feel. Although this was released in 1968 so this occured before that, it was apprently recorded (at least the bulk of it) in August of 1967 which was before this so it wasn't a work in progress. I prefer the slower version myself.

'Interstellar Overdrive' was the highlight for me, again loosely based on the album version, this 14 minute sonic experience was really good.

I really wish I could have been to one of these gigs, you know the experience of the thing just the energy must have been amazing but sadly only a handful were recorded with Syd in the band which is a damn shame, also a damn shame that they didn't record themselves at least once.

This is a great example of a show with Syd, most of them have bad vocal volume so this si as good as any you are likely to find, being that the lyrics are not really a factor for most of these songs, it didn't effect the grade as much as if this were a 'Wall' show, for example.

The very first recorded concert in Holland. And the only one with Syd. The sound is a little bad, but they played very good. A very important concert, because within a short time Syd was replaced by David!! Enjoy this concert!!!!!!! - pinkf@hetnet.nl
