'Zuri 1977' - 3rd Feb, 1977 - Zurich, Switzerland

Sound Quality: B-
Performance: B-
Overall: 2

This recording had some major issues indeed but it also sounds like the concert itself had some sound problems. It is listenable though just hard to enjoy the volume goes in and out and lots of balancing issues with the sound effects and the music. (Normally I try to sum this up in this part of the review but there are are a lot of notes I made so I will leave that to the track breakdown.

The performance was ok some change ups on 'Dogs' and some great solo work from Dave on the first part of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' but the problems really stop them from being highlights sadly. I am knocking the grade for the performance down because I feel some of the sound issues were not the fault of the recorder, unless he stashed the microphone badly.

Track breakdown...

Sheep: It is about a minute 45 before the music starts, but we do get bleating and stuff for the preeceding time. Not the best quality but not bad, scripture section is very clear.

Dogs: There is a middle section right before the 'You got to admit' lyrics start up again, this section is different from the album, not very different, not really improvisation but different. There is also some chatter for a moment when the aforementioned verse gets underway. There guitar should be a little bit louder and there is a twinge of piercing feedback a few times but is not really a big deal. The very end is missing, around the 'ground down by the storm' lyric, probably a minute or so.

Pigs On The Wing (Part 2): There are some bird sound effects in play during this song. I have a personal hatred of the sound of birds which doesn't help but I doubt many will argue the volume of them is too high.

Pigs (Three Different Ones): About 7 minutes in to a pretty good rendition you have some loud manic laughter but it was really loud. It does not sound the audience, it sounds like the 'Roger The Hat' laugh from 'Dark Side oF The Moon' but after that the volume drops, I have no clue what happened, if it was part of the show was just coincidence. The sounds effects are a lot louder than the music after that too so it could have been. There is a little more chatter then just after 11 minutes we have a small cut which jumps us forward to the next verse.  There is also a nice period of improvisation towards the end of the track, Rick takes the lead but Dave joins in.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5): The music kicks off we get the first few bars from Rick and then it stops, some kind of a equipment issue I am guessing. It starts again soon after that but takes over 6 minutes before the familar refrain. However the guitar is pretty low volume and then there is a bit of a fade out again. All these problems are a shame because Dave really cooks the solo in the middle before the vocal start, really well done!

Welcome To The Machine: I have no idea where this guy was standing but it sounds like right in front of a speaker that is only playing sound effects, The music is very low bu tthe sound effects very loud indeed. I have another bootleg from this show which is better.

Have A Cigar: Really nice version but the recording really took the edge off. Right at the end where the volume dips to go into the 'radio' effect there is kind of like a whooshing sound on the album, well here due to the sound effect volume issue it sounds more like a mating pig!

Wish You Were Here: Some kind of noise during the first verse, near to the recorder. Volume is pretty low.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 6-9): A little more chatter during the quiet build up. The keyboard section which starts the track had some issues too and volume varies. The guitar comes in after that and it is very low volume before a major volume rise, I don't really know what to make of this, it is hard to think the recorder is to blame. I have to think it is some kind of malfunction. Unless there is a set of speakers that recorder is near and those were not working right, it is really bad the guitar keeps fading out. I have a different bootleg from this night so I can hopefully tell one way or another. Also a couple of tape wobbles in the last 5 minutes. Would have been a nice version without the recording problems.

Encore: Missing! I doubt they didn't play one song, at least.

Drop kick this one to the curb, bad bad bad.
