'Amazing Pudding In Bath' - June 27, 1970 - Festival of Blues & Progressive Music, Somerset, England

Sound Quality: C+
Performance: B
Overall: 2

The claim to fame of this bootleg is the premier of a fully orchestrated 'Atom Heart Mother' (called 'The Amazing Pudding') so the performance gets upgraded from a 'B-' to a 'B', if that is reason enough to seek this out then it is probably one of the only reasons to do so.

The recording is pretty bad, lots of frequency distortion and volume changes as well as other problems scattered throughout. The only highlight for me is 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' which has some recording problems of its own but is the best performed track of the concert for sure.

Track breakdown...

Green Is The Colour: The quality is pretty bad, lots of issues. Static, noise etc etc

Careful With That Axe, Eugene: The recording issues have calmed down but the quality is not great. Around 4 minutes is something occurs to the recording and thje quality does get better but not for long. The performance isn't great at all, seemed a little messy and really blended in together to a large extent so it became more noise in places. I am sure the recording play it's part in this too. The screams are pretty short and drowned out a little by the vocal harmonies.

A Saucerful Of Secrets: I became disheartened after the last track, this song, like the previous one, is very susceptible to descending into noise. Thankfully it didn't, there was a fair amount of frequency distortion from the recording but it wasn't bad. The performance is really great, the second half in particular was amazing (despite Dave's voice sounding a little tortured) some really good drumming throughout especially in the third phase (Storm Signal), which is not known for that.

Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun: Little chatter between tracks but once the music starts it stops so it is not a problem. At the very end of the initial gong section (before the main riff starts) we have a sound drop out which caused me to turn up the volume but then it slowly ramps up, this might be the show itself.

The Amazing Pudding: Roger is kind enough to introduce this track for us that would soon become 'Atom Heart Mother'. We get a little chatter and some laughter about something at the very start while the horns are warming up (yikes). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_Festival_of_Blues_and_Progressive_Music, indicates this was the premier of this song with complete brass band and 12 string choir. The performance of the piece sounds new, that’s for sure but, as regulars will know, I dislike this song with the orchestra sections. More volume distortion issues occur in the song to ice the cake.

The historical nature of this show is not lost on me so it is one to have as a collector but there is nothing else to recommend this ROIO to you all.

Comments: (from 'Embryo - A Pink Floyd Chronology' by Hodges & Priston)

Two tapes are available, both from the same master, but of varying quality.
The first, available for some time, is incomplete, while the second more
recent copy features 'The Amazing Pudding' with orchestra for the first time,
and is of better quality.

A Copy of the poster for this gig may be found in Le Livre Du Pink Floyd
