'The Wall In Dortmund' - February 13th, 1981 - Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Germany

Sound Quality: B-
Performance: B-
Overall: 2

Not a good boot, the recording is plagued with issues, some throughout, like the bass distortion and some occur a lot like the volume inconsistency.

The performance also has some technical issues which are noted in the track breakdown, the crowd is pretty non-irritating, there is one at the end of the 'Comfortably Numb' who makes some very strange noises and also in the 'MC' part that follows and finally at the end but it is not bad, just weird. Apart from these the performance isn't that great either, its alright but I have heard a lot better. Highlight is 'Empty Spaces' with nice intensity, especially from Roger who gave a great vocal delivery of some really great lyrics.

Track Breakdown...

MC/In The Flesh: Recording is a bit harsh and the intro in German was a refreshing change.

The Thin Ice: More frequency distortions but the vocals are very clear.

Another Brick In The Wall (part 1): Nice bongo work.

Mother: The starts is delayed by a technical hitch which Roger says they will work out. Although I support, wholeheartedly, the inclusion of these problems I wish they would separate the track out so it can be skipped if you wanted to. If this was as bootleg I wanted to revisit, I can do without that every time. The song starts around 2:30 and is good rendition, the solo is really good and lyrics very heartfelt.

Goodbye Blue Sky: Nice keyboard work from Rick on this. I have noticed that despite the keyboard work being understated on 'Animals' and 'The Wall' the live versions seem to feature it a lot more. I am uncertain as to why this is but it is certainly great to hear.

Young Lust: The sound gets a little dull compared to the brightness of the rest of the show so far. Nice rendition.

One Of My Turns: The starts sees a noticeable change in volume, getting louder and clearer but not as clear as it was. This is one of my favorite tracks from the album, this has a boat load of energy, really nice. Shame about the volume changes. Recording is more harsh though.

Don't Leave Me Now: Vocals sound distant, harshness is continuing, looks like it is how this will be for a while.

Goodbye Cruel World: Very low volume, had to turn the dial two clicks plus the lyrics don't start for almost a full minute. Technical issue.

Hey You: Volume down again, so it could be the show itself was the problem.

Is There Anybody Out There?: It appears to be another malfunction, Dave's acoustic work is almost non-existent there is some but it doesn't sound full so I suspect this is the secondary guitarist.

Comfortably Numb: I am trying hard to come up with a word to describe this and raunchy was what I get, it’s not the clean and precise sound that I am used to hearing, this was more hard edged. It was still great.

Run Like Hell: One for all the clappers in the audience says Roger and boy does the audience respond! This song sounds harsh and the bass, I think, sounds terrible really muffled, probably from frequency distortion of the recording equipment.

The Trial: For all the recording issues the effect of the wall coming down was pretty good.

Leave this one alone, it not awful but other, much better, choices out there.
