'Plays The Animals' - 9th May 1977 - Oakland, CA

Sound Quality: A
Performance: A+
Overall: 5/5 iTunes (can I PLEASE get a time machine up in here!)

This is a phenomenal bootleg of a truly great show and is a must have, the quality is excellent, a couple of tracks have a hint of fish bowl but other than that superb! High recommend, a must have for Floyd fans.

The band is really on fire and put in a great performance, there is some feedback but not that much and we all like a bit of feedback anyway, it adds a little something.

(this is a different bootleg, this version does not contain the last track listed, but is the same performance)

Here is my track breakdown.

Sheep: The vocals at the start are pretty muffled but then that could also be Roger! The mock scripture is really clear and a good version of this track.

Pigs On The Wing (part one): Great sound, good volume balance with acoustic guitar and vocals.

Dogs: This one is a little fishbowl-y but not so much so to be annoying. This has some great, rough sounding guitar work with some feedback plus lots of improvisation.

Pigs On The Wing (part two): Solid, good balance like the first part and it includes the guitar solo that appeared not the old 8 track version.

Pigs (Three Different Ones): Great version again. The end is a major, old school, freak out that harps back to the early days of Floyd.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts I-V): Loved it! A little rough again but I like that and, to me, is the reason to listen to bootlegs, the unpolished, raw performance.

Welcome To The Machine: The vocals are a little haggard and the middle portion has a lot of deviation from the original.

Have A Cigar: Roger and Dave have some fun in this one, cracking up on the first verse and on the second, Roger has to give it another try. It is a refreshing change and the guitar work is very good, really funky. This is a really underrated track on a fantastic album.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts IV-IX): 20 minutes in length with a ton of improvisations. Excellent.

Money: They are really feeling it for this show, a huge 'woo' from Dave and lots more improv with a run time of over 10 minutes,

Us & Them: Feedback is most notable on this track but again not a major deal for me - if you are listening with headphones you might want to take note though.

Careful With That Axe, Eugene: A old classic makes a come back here and it is the last time this will ever get performed live, which is a real shame, but we have to cherish the moments we do have. Great version, if I have to nitpick at all then I would say the first set of screams was really muffled (but again could have been Roger, he was probably out of practice!) and there was a wind effect around the same time which was really loud. But another great track to close out the album.

Pick this bootleg up, you will not be disappointed!

Comments: Excellent crowd recording. POTW-2 contains 'the' guitar solo at the end. Pigs contains about 3 to 5 minutes jam-session at the end (very nice !!!) - PIET (?)

Great show (the best I've heard). This one is edited a little better than the 'Oakland...' RoIO, but this have also resulted in that some of the speaking between songs have been cut out. There is also a little more tape hiss on this one than on the other. I consider it a to be a must have, to have one of the CD's from this show. -TOR

This is a wonderful recording of an awesome show. The above times are taken from the cd's themselves. The times in parentheses are the actual times from the cd timer. During "WYWH" there are three loud noises, like someone dropped something (quite a shock if you're listening through headphones!). The first part of "SOYCD" fades out a little early (I think they ran out of room when this was recorded). -ANON

It seems that there are versions of Plays The Animals that have SOYCD 1-5 truncated. But mine is not. It features the complete show, and I prefer the sound quality on it than on In The Flesh. So I would say that if you are lucky enough to have the untruncated version, PTA is preferable. -ANON

Up to this time, I thought that "In The Flesh" was the best recording from the 1977 tour. Well guess what, I think I might have been wrong. I just purchased "Plays The Animals", and like it much more than both "Oakland" and "In The Flesh". With the exception of some loud noises during "Wish You Were Here", the sound quality is exceptional, especially for an audience recording. This is the complete show from the May 9, 1977 Oakland show, which includes "Careful With That Axe, Eugene". A definite must have. - ABDABS
