22nd June, 1969 - Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England

Sound Quality: F
Performance: C
Overall: 1/5 Storage

'The Man and The Journey' is, to me, a failed experiment in the same category as 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' on the 'Atom Heart Mother' album. Too much experimentation without any real framework to hang it from just, for me anyway, puts it past the point of being great to listen too. Interesting yes, but not something you will keep returning too.

There is lots of distortion (and not the good kind!), cut of tracks and drop outs. The performance, from what I could discern, was not that great either, Dave vocals were too raw and not really anything new to discover although this was still a new piece at the time so thats not surprising.

I am not going to break down the tracks, I started but got about half way no notable points at all, 'Nightmare' (track 5) and 'The Beginning' (track 7, a version of'Green Is The Color') were passable. 'The End Of The Beginning' (Track 11, a version of 'As Saucerful Of Secrets') started out not too bad, Dave's vocal line is tortured probably from too many show but the song cuts off at the end. The final track - 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' was an ok version but again the distortion factor came into play but at least is was listenable.

Avoid this one, I have few other versions of this material to go thru and hopefully at least one is a little better than this. The info from the original says the quality was very good, hopefully he means the transfer from vinyl.
