'British Winter Tour 74' - 19th Nov 1974 - Trentham Gardens, Stoke On Trent, England

Sound Quality: A-
Performance: A-
iTunes: 4/5 Keep

This one is a historic event, the first performance of the tracks which would later become 'Sheep' and 'Dogs' and the also the first time 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' was introduced as such. (They performed a piece called 'Shine On' on the French tour in June of 1974)

The show is part of the whole concert and features the three tracks previously mentioned, SOYCD being played as the complete work, but the sound quality is very good on the whole. The original notes indicate this was taken from vinyl and it does show, you can hear some pops and also on SOYCD you have, what sounds like, a scratch on the disk, but it is still infinitely listenable.

The volume on 'Raving And Drooling', the first track, and also SOYCD is a little low, where as 'You Gotta Be Crazy', track two, was good, which meant I had to turn the volume up on tracks one and three but down for the second on. Just a minor inconvenience but I thought I would mention it, I will be adjusting the volume in iTunes for sure.

The only other problem was the vocals were a little muffled, which seems to be par for the course for these things, but with tracks like R&D and YGBC the lyrics are pretty tough to follow, so it gets my overall A- for sound.

The performance got an A-, the material was new and there was some interesting things in SOYCD, there was some really nice drumming and also the keyboards/organ were more stated and flamboyant than on the final album, both of which were great.

Definitely search this one out, really good to hear material before it is been really nailed down, work in progress as it were. Great stuff.

Comments: Finally, this gem of the '74 concert in Trentham Gardens shows up on cd. As it is copied directly from the lp, sometimes scratches and other unwanted noises appear. Not that is is too disturbing, the lp-source must have been in pretty good condition. Sound quality is VG+, a little thin on the bass and a bit muttered. Shine On is in one piece. The performance is pretty tight, and it's always nice to hear the nine parts of SOYCD together as they always should have been, imho. I recommend it. - Oscar
